1936-2010
Betty Lou Miller Lyons, 73, rural Osawatomie, died March 14, 2010, at her home.
She was the tenth of 14 children born to Kelsey and Elsie Metzger Miller on Nov. 12, 1936. She was born on a farm in Miami County south of Osawatomie where she spent her early childhood.
She attended a one-room school for a few years. After moving to Osawatomie with her family, she attended school in Osawatomie and graduated in 1954.
During high school, she worked at the Osawatomie State Hospital in the dietary department and completed a basic psychiatric aide course in June 1956.
She was united in marriage to Virgil R. Lyons on Oct. 19, 1956, in Osawatomie. The couple spent the first six years of marriage in various locations as Virgil was in the U.S. Air Force. After being discharged from the Air Force in 1962, the couple moved back to the Osawatomie area with their adopted son, Curtis.
Although Betty had no children of her own, very seldom could you go into her house and not find children. Because of her love for children, she spent the most enjoyable years of her life as a Foster Grandma at Trojan Elementary School in Osawatomie with first graders from 1999 to 2010.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Bill, Bob, Chuck and Harry Miller; her adopted son, Charles Curtis Lyons; and one foster daughter, Jacqueline Lyons Wilcut.
She is survived by her husband, Virgil Lyons of the home; one grandson; two special children who knew her as Grandma Betty, Derick Downey and Katie Beth Wilson; three brothers, Glen, John and Larry Miller; and six sisters, Velma, Donna, Ruth, Ina, Nina and June. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Faith Baptist Church, with services immediately following. Burial of ashes is tentatively scheduled to be in June 2010 at the Mound Creek Cemetery. Arrangements are by Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home, 203 Main St., Osawatomie, KS 66064, (913) 755-2114. |
