LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas honored student athletes named to the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll for 2009 during halftime of the KU-Baylor University men’s basketball game Jan. 20 at Allen Fieldhouse.

Student athletes who achieved a grade-point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and were enrolled during the spring or fall 2009 semesters are eligible for the honor. Receiving special recognition were students who earned 4.0 GPAs in one or both semesters.

“These student athletes show remarkable determination,” said athletics director Lew Perkins. “It takes a special person to match athletic intensity with determination in the classroom. These grades are a credit to them, their professors and to our outstanding student-athlete support staff. We’re very proud of all of them.”

For two educators, learning about the real world outside the classroom is very important.

Two teachers were recently selected as Teacher of the Year of Spring Hill USD 230 for 2011. Math teacher Megan Sandberg was selected as the 2011 Elementary School Teacher of the Year, and Georann Whitman, a vocal music teacher at Spring Hill High School, was chosen as the district’s 2011 Secondary Teacher of the Year.

“Everything we do in class I try to relate it to the real world, with each new concept,” Sandberg said.

Sandberg said the honor was something she was not expecting. The seventh- year teacher received an early taste of her profession when while growing up in Frankfort, Kan. She worked with kindergarteners for an elective class during her senior year of high school.

“Doing that just kind of reassured  me that I definitely wanted to do something with kids,” Sandberg said. “Being a teacher was the best option.”

She later earned a bachelor’s and Master degree from the University of Kansas. She said it’s a honor to work in the district and couldn’t imagine working anywhere else.

“I started here right out of college,” Sandberg said. “I’ve been here ever since and I love it.”

District seeking input from patrons PDF Print E-mail

Superintendent Bart Goering walked around the meeting room at Hilltop Education Center, sort of like a talk show host.

During the Board of Education meeting Monday night, Goering and business director Doug Schwinn asked audience members to make estimates for the upcoming school budget cuts. Visitors brave enough to make guesses tried to keep their numbers as low as possible.

Some answers on the Budget Interactive Generator concerning a potential harsh reality came with laughter and humor from people in attendance, as well.
The presentation was an initiative to get patrons and parents involved in the process.

One of the first questions involved state cuts from base state aid per pupil. The worksheet began with a $300 cut (a collaborative guess from audience members), which resulted in more than $800,000 for the district. Some of the other questions that followed involved tax levies, student activities and free and reduced lunches.
“Remember you’re just taking a test drive,” Goering said, as the crowd plugged in numbers. “You’re not purchasing this.”
