PITTSBURG, Kan. — Cale Karigan, a 2010 Paola High School graduate, will get a chance to see his new home Saturday as he walks onto the field at Carney Smith Stadium for the 37th annual Kansas Shrine Bowl All-Star football game.

Karigan, who played offensive and defensive line for Paola, was selected to represent the Panthers on the East Squad in the senior all-star football game.

It will be a familiar place for Karigan, who signed a letter of intent to play football at Pittsburg State. He also follows in the footsteps of his cousin, Jordan Karr, and uncle, Scott Karr, who played football for the Gorillas.

Karigan was in St. Louis on Saturday, as the East and West teams visited the St. Louis unit of Shriners Hospitals and visited with patients.

Less than 24 hours after reporting to their team camps in Emporia and Salina, a group of 135 players, coaches, managers, trainers and Shriners left Union Station at 7:30 Saturday morning for the five-hour Amtrack train ride to St. Louis to visit with the children the Shrine Bowl benefits.

The group arrived at Kirkwood, Mo., a St. Louis suburb not far from the Shriners Hospital, where they were bused to the hospital for a light lunch, then split into smaller groups and escorted on tours of the hospital.

The pediatric hospital specializes in orthopedics.

Shrine Bowl players met with patients in the hospital’s recreation room in an atmosphere described as “magic.”

The players soon learn the young patients are often motivated by other people saying they “can’t” to various activities, and setting out to prove they “can.”

The Kansas Shrine Bowl All-Star Football Game is an annual event featuring two football teams composed of 68 of the best graduating high school players from the East and West.

Kickoff for this year’s game at Carnie Smith Stadium in Pittsburg is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.

Proceeds from all Shrine Bowl events support the Shriners Hospitals for Children, a network of 22 hospitals.
