Paola High School theater students will put their talents on display Thursday, Friday and Saturday during evening performances of “The Fantasticks.” The 1960 musical is about two neighboring fathers who put up a wall between their houses to ensure that their children fall in love, because they know children always do what their parents forbid. After the children do fall in love, they discover their fathers’ plot and they each go off and experience things in the world. They return to each other and the love they had, having learned from the world and made an informed decision. It is widely considered to be the longest-running musical in the world. Theater director Leslie Coats said the play is simplistic in cast and set design, but that doesn’t make it easy to perform. “Simplicity is often the hardest thing to do in theater,” she said. Still, Coats is excited about presenting the popular musical. “I think it’s the finest pieces of small musical writing,” she said. The performances are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Paola High School. The cast includes: Shannon Moore as the girl (Luisa), Nathan Short as the boy (Matt), Brian Buntin as the boy’s father (Hucklebee), Alec Smith as the girl’s father (Bellomy), Marcus Tetwiler as the narrator (El Gallo), Jacob Gillespie as the old actor (Henry), Isaac Scroggie as the man who dies (Mortimer) and Audrey Reynolds as the mute. Other crew members include: Katherine Kennedy as stage manager; Ashley Bowen and Hayden Taylor as assistant stage managers; Kyam McCormack as assistant to the music director; Bill Dillenbeck, Austin Brocker, Hannah McFarland, Husain Agha and Robert Hines working lights; Riley Sawyer and Cooper Sims-West controlling sound; Emily Fry, Jordan Malone and Devon Stamper handling the deck crew; Bailey Barney, Katie Hart and Taylor Schartz working on costume and makeup; and Sarah Walper as box office manager.
