Racing fans packed into the basement of the United Methodist Church in Paola on Saturday for some fast-paced action during Pack 3105’s pinewood derby. Twelve youths ranging from the younger tigers and wolves to the older bears and Webelos put their personalized pinewood derby racers to the test during several timed races down a sloped track. There also were nine competitors in a separate open class. The excitement certainly could be felt in the room as the young competitors cheered on the racers they had worked weeks to create by carving and detailing to perfection. “I won! I told you less weight goes faster,” one young competitor shouted to another after a race. “That one is a time machine!” another competitor shouted out while pointing to a derby car with a unique appearance. Although there were a variety of designs, the derby cars did have to maintain certain size and weight specifications to race. In one race, a car designed to look like a dollar bill caught the eye of some young scouts. “The dollar car won, I should have made a dollar car,” one scout said. “That was awesome, that was a show!” a nearby spectator declared. When all was said and done, it was 6-year-old Ashton McRoberts who took first place in the competition, and won a large trophy for his efforts. Ryan Prothe took second place, and Dylan Waterman finished in third place. Four-year-old Jordan Curry, one of the youngest competitors, took first place in the open class. Still, there were plenty more awards to go around Saturday. Trenton Curry won the slowpoke award, Gavin Nicholson won best Cub Scout design, Trenton Curry won race car design, Davin McRoberts won the spit and polish award, Skyler Hopkins won the most unusual design award and Dylan Waterman won the most aerodynamic design award.
