Opal Nadine Barnes, 80, Osawatomie, died Jan. 30, 2010, at her home.She was born Aug. 6, 1929, on the family farm at Custer City, Okla. She was the daughter of Claudie Arthur and Flossie Olive DeLozier Bales. She attended school in Custer City, graduating from high school there. In 1946, she married Leonard Stein; to this union one son, Darrel Len, was born. She was a Stanley Home Products representative for 14 years. She was employed in the grocery business and at King Radio. She was a card player, at times playing 1,000 hands in a year. She loved bingo. She fed the birds and squirrels and collected hummingbird figurines. Her crocheted pot holders are famous. She will be missed at the Louisburg Jamboree and at the Whistle Stop. She was preceded in death by her son, Darrel Len Stein, who died at age 6; her husband, Howard Barnes, who died Feb. 16, 1993; and a step-son, E. Frank Barnes, who died Dec. 10, 1993. Survivors include her cousin, Debbie Aubrey of Oklahoma City; step-son, Howard Barnes of Wichita; two step-daughters, Margret Brown of St. Louis and Lynn Barnes of Juneau, Alaska; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Services were Tuesday, followed by burial in the Osawatomie Cemetery. Arrangements were under the care of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home, 203 Main St., Osawatomie, KS 66064, (913) 755-2114. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Michael Brown, David Pessin, Andrew Aubrey, John Merkey, Howard F. Barnes and Michael Barnes. Memorials are to the American Cancer Society.
