Ernest Wayne Hastings, 64, rural Osawatomie, died Jan. 21, 2010 at his home.

Ernie was born March 12, 1945, at Osawatomie. He was the son of Bert W. and Berenice E. Benz Hastings. He graduated from Osawatomie High School with the class of 1963.

He joined the U.S. Army in 1963 and was honorably discharged in 1966.

He was united in marriage to Sharon Elrod on Jan. 14, 1967, at Hillsdale. They made their home in Osawatomie and became the parents of three sons.
He had worked as a welder at Sun-Master and then Rotech in Olathe from 1966 until 1995.

He enjoyed spending time with his sons and grandchildren, fishing and farming. He also enjoyed rodeos, having been a bull rider himself in his younger years.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association, American Legion and VFW.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles Hastings.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon of the home; three sons, David Hastings of Osawatomie, Steven Hastings of rural Rantoul and Daniel Hastings of Osawatomie; one sister, Donna Ray of Osawatomie; and six grandchildren.

Services were Monday, followed by burial in the Osawatomie Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements were handled by the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home, 203 Main St., Osawatomie, KS 66064, (913) 755-2114.

Memorials are to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
