Several residents, students and city employees will have a day off Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., and the community is invited to a celebration of the life of the famous civil rights activist that evening. Paola City Hall, Paola Post Office, Paola Free Library and Miami County offices will be closed Monday, and Paola USD 368 students and faculty also will have the day off. The Rev. Nathan Jones of First Mount Olivet Baptist Church said a special service in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. is scheduled to take place at 6:30 p.m. Monday at his church, 301 E. Miami St. All of the churches that make up the Paola Association for Church Action contribute to the service, and all community members are invited to attend, Jones said. This year’s event is scheduled to feature music from the choir at My Father’s House, praise dancing, a portrayal of the famous “I have a dream” speech and a message from The Rev. Tony Carter Jr. of Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kan. “We’re excited about the event,” Jones said.
