District Judge Amy Harth stood before a packed room Monday as she performed the swearing in ceremony for five Miami County officials elected in November. Register of Deeds Katie Forck, County Clerk Janet White, County Attorney David Miller, County Commissioner Bonnie “Rob” Roberts, and Sheriff Frank Kelly took the oath of office during a 1 p.m. ceremony at the Miami County Administration Building. Economic concerns came to the fore when Roberts, during his speech, encouraged voters to participate in future county budget hearings. Afterward, several others said they, too, have economic concerns. Kelly said he expects to see a lot of changes for the Sheriff’s Office due to the declining economy. “I know we may have to make cuts as the economy gets tougher, but we still want to provide that security for the public, so they know they’re being protected,” he said. Roberts said funding is the biggest challenge the commission faces. “We’ll work very diligently to watch the dollars, but we’ll try to do as much as we can,” he said. Forck said, “The market has slowed way down because of the economy. We need to get interest rates going, so we can get more money back in the county.” Miller, starting his fifth term, said, “We just want to maintain the professionalism we’ve had in the past and be ready for anything that does occur. We’re well prepared for that.” As a former deputy clerk, White said she doesn’t anticipate making changes in the county clerk’s office, but moving up means the buck will now stop at her desk. “There will definitely be challenges, but I intend to do the very best I can,” she said.
