Residents of Spring Hill cast their votes in November, giving the green light to a half-cent tax increase to fund a new aquatic center and develop a new lake side park.

The ballot issues faced more opposition in Johnson county than in Miami county.

The planned aquatic center includes a zero-depth entry pool, water slides, lazy river, water play features, spray ground, tot pool, concession stand and shade structures. Lake improvements include road access, site amenities, picnic areas and natural landscaping.

Residents were asked to vote on two questions concerning the aquatic center and lake improvements.

Question 1: “Shall a general purpose retailers’ sales tax in the amount of one-half of one percent (.50%) be levied in the City of Spring Hill, Kansas, for park and recreation purposes including, but not limited to, a new aquatic facility complex and improvements to the City’s Lake Side Park, and for other general purposes of the City, including, but not limited to, pledging such tax to the payment of the principal of and interest on bonds or other obligations issued to finance the aquatic facility complex and Lake Side Park improvements, with such tax to commence as soon as permitted by law, all pursuant to the provisions of K.S.A. 12-187 et seq. and K.S.A. 12-195?”

The question passed with 66 percent voting “yes” in Miami county. Two precincts reported with 958 votes, 639 in favor of the increase and 319 opposed.

The question faced a closer contest in Johnson county, receiving only a 50.36 percent approval. Three precincts reported 1,253 votes with 631 voters approving the increase and 622 opposing it.

Question 2: “Shall the City of Spring Hill, Kansas, issue general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $6,000,000 to pay the costs of (a) acquiring a site for, constructing and equipping a new aquatic facility complex and all things necessary and incidental thereto and (b) improving the City’s Lake Side Park by constructing a pier/dock, acquiring land for and constructing an access road, landscaping and all things necessary and incidental thereto, all pursuant to the provisions of K.S.A. 12-1301 et seq. and K.S.A. 10-101 et seq.?”

Again, the question received more favorable responses from the 949 voters in Miami County. The question passed with 66.81 percent of voters marking “yes”; 634 voters approved, while 315 opposed.

In Johnson County, the vote passed with 50.08 percent approval. Of the 1,254 voters, 628 approved the question while 626 opposed it.

Jonathan Roberts, city administrator, said the next step is for the city to begin the process of getting contractors engaged, sitting down with the city’s financial advisor to get the financial side worked out and construct final plans.

“We have a rough time line, and we’ll work to expedite that as much as possible,” Roberts said.
